In the end, this album is a perfect example of what the Dead are allabout - and that's what this is all about; the Dead are no longer a bandthat tries to bring a number of styles in their music together - they area band that stands as one, one being. And given that musical style,Europe '72 is one of the very best records of its kind.
Still, the fact remains, this is a European double live album - and a greatone. Unfortunately for me and the reviewer, I don't have the leeway totalk about the music in this album without mentioning the European flavouras the title suggest, since I have no idea how to phrase it in the Englishlanguage. But in a way, this album can be regarded as an aural reminder ofa trip to Europe, for the Dead, and through the Dead, for the listener.As we were at the time, they were just beginning to realise the delights ofdriving around Europe in a van; as I was, I was finding out what it was liketo live in Europe, with nothing but a bunch of deadheads for company. And theyinvoked us; they made us experience those moments in front of thosefriendly faces in the stadium, the picnics in the park, the beer, the wineand the good weather. There are moments that still take me back; the Dead'sfirst encounter with the Leningrad Ensemble, for example, and theexperience of hearing their music live in Athens, and the wonderful momentwhen the Dead suddenly discovered their audience, or vice-versa. Thisalbum is not merely a catalogue of those events, though; it's a snapshotof the Dead's soul as it was at the time, being lived. To judge from thisalbum, this is a band that is only getting more and more into its roots,and who knows how long they'll be able to sustain the concept. Europe '72is merely the first in a whole series of records on this theme, and as such, itgives the band the opportunity to get used to playing as a whole, as theyare now, the way a band was meant to be played in the live situation,without the pressure of having to fit to the limits of the studio set-up andthe technologies of compression and overdubbing.
